While staying in the holy city of Varanasi for a few days I had great fun watching and teasing the monkeys that lived on the rooftops. Families of monkeys leapt from roof to roof on the hunt each day passing the room window.
From the rooftop of my guesthouse, I watched monkey clans systematically invade houses. They use strategy and numbers to take over entire rooftops.
For example, if a person is on their roof, drying food and doing washing, a dozen monkeys will invade the rooftop, while the unfortunate resident tries to ward them off with a long heavy bamboo piece (everyone keeps them on their roof for this reason alone), the rest of the monkey clan will be climbing over balconies and through windows to rob the resident of any food that is stored inside the house. Unlike dogs, monkey have no fear and will attack humans will full bravado if they are threatened. The monkeys either steal your clothes, eat the buttons of shirts or just throw them all over the neighbourhood for fun. Yes monkeys are very cute and cool and all, but only from behind the anti monkey bars or glass doors!!
